Centenary Birthday celebration of late Archbishop of Bhopal
Eugene D’ Souza was held at St. Francis of Assisi Cathedral, Jehangirabad on 15th
November 2017.
Archbishop Most Rev. Leo Cornelio along with many priests,
religious and laity remembered very fondly the Late Archbishop Eugene D’ Souza,
the founder of the diocese and prayed for the departed soul at St. Francis of
Assisi Cathedral, Jehangirabad on his 100th Birth Anniversary.
Late Archbishop Most Rev. Eugene D’ Souza was born on 15
November 1917. At the age of 34 he became the first Indian Bishop and later
Archbishop of Nagpur. The then Papal Inter nuncio, the Most Rev. Leo Kierkels
consecrated him on 3rd oct. 1951. Most Rev. Eugene D' Souza was
transferred from Nagpur to Bhopal to be its first Archbishop. He became the Archbishop of Bhopal in
1963 since then the diocese of Bhopal gradually began to be developed with many
institutions, churches and religious personals. He gave his last breath on 18
March 2003.

Archbishop Eugene on his 100 years birthday said that -It is a simple attribute
to a vibrant prophet of the time. He remained a legend servant of the society
and of the Church. He was an intellectual man for the people but for God’s
work. He was a wise man. Archbishop emeritus Pascal Topno said over the
telephone on late Archbishop that he was man of compassion and love and
remained an active member of CBCI (Catholic Bishop’s Conference of India). He
was a man of quality Education and Social service.
Fr. Maria Stephen, the PRO said that Late Archbishop Eugene was
intelligent and down to the earth who remains in the heart of the city of lakes.
His relationship skills brought the people together far and wide and made known
the Mission of the Church.
